Micronation of Ludea

Introduction

Ludea (Pronouced Lu-dee-ah) is a micronation where language and culture are generated via play.

The Ludeans come from a generation that has grown up with games, abstract machines, and digital processes. It has become second nature for them to make abstractions of reality in terms of models, systems, processes, and flows. The world of Ludea explores the post-human condition and unstable nature of contemporary existence via three contrasting experiences of place. This occurs through signs and symbols that are mapped onto real-world locations to create meaningful connections and experiences across three different public spaces: virtual, networked and physical.

Urban Codemaking

Ludean Guilds of Urban Codemakers

More recently, in 2010, the Ludeans have become engaged in a town planning project. Via their interventions into the City of Melbourne connections with city officials have led to the establishment of a collective of guilds in the city. Initial fieldwork has commenced and further opportunities have recently been announced at the Urban Codemakers website [1]. Members of the Urban Codemakers have been invited to participate.

The title to who first settled Melbourne itself in 1835 remains contested with two landing parties arriving from Tasmania at the same time. Two years later the township was named Melbourne and the checker-board plan of Melbourne was approved.

Now, finally, the true story has been told. As the outcome of the Urban Codemaking project has revealed the true architect of the city is Robert Russell, Ludean Architect of Melbourne [2]. This archive will be updated to reflect this revelation and have a significant impact on the future of our micronation.

The City of Melbourne is, in fact, Ludea.

A brief history

AR tags in Guildford Lane

This educational resource outlining the Ludean world was founded on Wednesday March 15th in the year 2006. The name Ludea was first attributed to an individual in early 2005 - it was later adopted as the name for an emerging micro-nation in November of the same year. The first cloud appeared in mid 2004.

Cultures, languages, and ways of being may be invented within game worlds. Ludea is a world in which three tribes subscribing to conflicting ideologies define their territories along lines of communication. On the streets of Melbourne three warring cultures struggle for territory:

Neo-Materialists use traditional forms of communication such as words;

Post-Symbolics communicate only through images, and;

Post-Humans are reliant on machines for communication.

Each tribe gathers resources and tags in colour - Neo-Materialist orange, Post-Symbolic green and Post-Human blue.

Each of these ideologies represents a position of distrust with a particular mode of communication and has developed an alternative language to avoid using this particular mode. By way of example, the post-linguistic has come to distrust written and spoken words, and they have embraced communication that consists solely of gestures and synaesthetic icons.

The Ludean Token

Freshly minted tokens

In 2008 the first Ludean currency was introduced. Called the Token (abbrv. LdT) it was initially a small three-dimensional orange object. A small quantity of these were distributed in October 2008. In 2009 a refined version of the token was introduced in denominations of $1 LdT and $3 LdT. These have been distributed more widely.
